Coaches Club – 1-to-1 Receiving
In this series of posts, we share with you some drills and session plans for you to apply to your training sessions.
I thought for today’s activity we should look at something that can be used for those who are returning back for small team training or the rising number of one-to-one coaching sessions. The activity focuses on the body position of the receiver. More specifically them adopting an open body position type. This is something that myself and my coaching colleagues have really tried to emphasise with the players that we work with.
This short clip from Keepitonthedeck gives a decent explanation as to why we as coaches should want our players to play with an open body as opposed to a predictable and restrictive closed body.
The activity below is one that I have only recently came across whilst participating in a one-to-one session led by a fellow coach and really great friend of mine, Harry Sherman (Twitter). It’s one that I’ve recently implemented in Kinja FC men’s team small-sided training.
For my small sided sessions I have replaced the coach with a player acting as a server. This allows the players an opportunity to perform in high-intensity bursts before switching and resting.
With a lot of the one-to-one activities that I have conducted, I wouldn’t stick purely to the activity provided, I have often created own variations and progressions based on the needs of the players participating. There is certainly room for you to be creative here and adapt what you see fit. I’d welcome any adaptions you make, I’m sure Harry would too, in the comments section below at the bottom of the piece.
Part 2 which is the progression of part 1 can be done with or without a defender acting as the blue cone. Given the social distancing measures at the moment I clearly opted for just a blue cone. This could, however, be an option to revisit after the current global pandemic is over and the social distance measures are eased to allow contact training
Drop us a message in the comments section below if you’ve used this session before and let us know how it went.

Please don’t take the drill sources as gospel, we’ve tried to credit drills, especially those we’ve seen elsewhere, alternatively if that’s not possible, we’ve credited the coach that has put on that version of that drill. Please get in touch, using the comments section below if there’s another source.
