Coaches Club – Precision Passing Game
In this series of posts, we share with you some drills and session plans for you to apply to your training sessions.
Today’s activity is a really good game for those of you that work with younger age groups. That’s not to say that you can’t use it with an older age group as a fun warm-up game.
The focus of the activity is on a player’s passing technique, particularly on the accuracy to be able to hit the target ball, and the weight of the pass, to be able to knock the target ball off the cone.
The video below from rom7ooo highlights some great long-range passes from recent times in the professional game. Keep an eye out for some of the low driven passes, these are the ones that are relevant to the activity below.
The session below is a real favourite of mine when it comes to coaching younger age groups and whilst coaching holiday camps. It’s one that I played as a kid growing up at various training sessions and holiday camps. It’s an activity that’s probably well known, however I have added a few progressions to the game that give it a slight twist.
It’s worth noting that for this to work you really need a minimum of 2 balls, 3 cones and 2 players per set-up. If you aren’t fortunate enough to have these resources then you could remove the target ball and place another cone balanced on top of the middle cone, so players will then have to knock that off instead. After one or two normal rounds of the game, be sure to start to introduce the progressions. The first progression is really a must to keep the more able players challenged and engaged.
Drop us a message in the comments section below if you’ve used this session before and let us know how it went.

Please don’t take the drill sources as gospel, we’ve tried to credit drills, especially those we’ve seen elsewhere, alternatively if that’s not possible, we’ve credited the coach that has put on that version of that drill. Please get in touch, using the comments section below if there’s another source.
