Coaches Club – 5v3 Moving The Ball Quickly
In this series of posts, we share with you some drills and session plans for you to apply to your training sessions.
Today’s drill share looks at an area of the game that I really like to emphasise with the teams I work with. That’s moving the ball quickly. I like my team’s to be patient in possession if we’re setting up for a long possession. I want them to try to search for the right opportunity, I believe this can be created by moving the ball quickly, trying to stretch the opposition and create those little gaps. Certainly, at grassroots level, I feel if teams are able to do this successfully then they can carve open even the most disciplined of defences.
For today’s post, I have included a video (by Football 90cộng1) that I believe highlights some really great goals that are scored as a result of quick combinations, drawing out their opposition and spotting the window of opportunity to break their opposition. I’d be sure to show your team the Man City goal that they score against Leicester (1:26) and ask your team how they are able to breakdown a resolute Leicester with ease? Hopefully one of the answers will be through quick ball movement or Tiki Taka.
The activity below focuses on 2 aspects, the main one being for the attacking team and that is the quick ball movement, movement off the ball and combination play. The other aspect that this activity could be delivered on is focusing on the defenders and them remaining compact and not let any pass go through the box.
I’ve only delivered the activity below focusing on the attackers, so please do let me know if you do manage to try this from a defenders perspective as well.
Numbers-wise you have a little bit of flexibility e.g. a 4v2 – 7v4 but I really wouldn’t go beyond these parameters, as you want to make sure that (1) the attackers have an overload (certainly to start the drill, you can always adapt this as they progress) and (2) all players are engaged and see as much of the ball as they can.
Drop us a message in the comments section below if you’ve used this session before and let us know how it went.
Also if you have any great sessions that you’d like us to share or have found any online, then please let us know in the comments section.

Please don’t take the drill sources as gospel, we’ve tried to credit drills, especially those we’ve seen elsewhere, alternatively if that’s not possible, we’ve credited the coach that has put on that version of that drill. Please get in touch, using the comments section below if there’s another source.
