Coaches Club – Four Corner Rondo Transition Game
In this series of posts, we share with you some drills and session plans for you to apply to your training sessions.
Today we are looking at transition, particularly from attack to defence on an individual or pairs level. It’s a great adaption of the well-known rondo warm-up game, that can be fun and intense.
You may have seen some of our previous activities on transition play, this is a really good supplement to those activities. as previously mentioned the focus is going to be the transition from in possession to out of possession. Below is a video by Riccardo Marchioli which outlines his defensive principles for his Brunswick City side. For the purpose of this activity, I’d take a look at the counter-pressing section (1:10) especially the first clip from a very old game that shows counter-pressing executed well. This could be a good clip to share with your team and be sure to emphasise the speed at which transition and the counter-press takes place.
Counter-pressing is essentially what we are asking the player to do in this activity. When an attacking player (A) loses possession to a defender (B) we are asking them to go and counter-press another box to win a new ball.
I first came across this adaption whilst working with another top coach, Coach Ricky. Be aware that this is an activity that is very numbers sensitive, less than 12 can be a real struggle even if you ended up dropping it down to 3 boxes. You are much better with large numbers with this one, and even if means you add in another 2 boxes and another 2 defenders then you should still be able to gain you outcomes from this exercise.
This may be an obvious point, but be sure to encourage those A’s who have now become B’s, the more focus and encouragement on them, then the more intensity you’ll gain from them and the quicker the transitions will be, which is what you want.

Please don’t take the drill sources as gospel, we’ve tried to credit drills, especially those we’ve seen elsewhere, alternatively if that’s not possible, we’ve credited the coach that has put on that version of that drill. Please get in touch, using the comments section below if there’s another source.
