Coaches Club – 1v1 Breakaway Attacking Drill
In this series of posts, we share with you some drills and session plans for you to apply to your training sessions.
As you may have seen by now, quite a few of the previous sessions we’ve uploaded have been 1v1 and quick attacking focused. This is no mistake, when working with a new team my belief is to focus on creativity and attacking first before working on defensive organisation. For me I’d rather see my team win 5-2 rather than 1-0, that’s because as a player I loved attacking, and that’s now transferred over to my coaching.
The exercise at the bottom of the piece is looking at a quick counter-attack in a 1v1 situation. The video just underneath this text is a compilation of some very nice quick counter-attacking goals that BT Sport uploaded onto their YouTube channel. This is something that you can show your players before or after the session to tease out the coaching points of attacking quickly.
The drill below is one that I have only used on one or two occasions. This is because more often than not I am working with large numbers of players. The activity designed below could have at most 4 stations, which in a 1v1 situation means 8 players plus a goalkeeper which makes 9. Alternatively, 2v2 could be tried or 2v1’s in favour of the A players.
The competition element of the drill really engaged the group of U15s that tried it with. The only thing I’d say to be wary of here is the waiting time between each station, as long as you’re on top of it and manage it well then this will work well. If you have small numbers then this should work fine. Additional ideas on this would be welcome in the comments section below.
Drop us a message in the comments section below if you’ve used this session before and let us know how it went.
Also if you have any great sessions that you’d like us to share or have found any online, then please let us know in the comments section.

Please don’t take the drill sources as gospel, we’ve tried to credit drills, especially those we’ve seen elsewhere, alternatively if that’s not possible, we’ve credited the coach that has put on that version of that drill. Please get in touch, using the comments section below if there’s another source.
