Lopetegui on the brink as the dreaded Real Madrid goal drought dehydrates supporters.

Real Madrid manager Julien Lopetegui has been left on the brink as Real Madrid fell to fourth in La Liga, level on points with Espanyol who are the only team to have a perfect home record so far this season.

Real Madrid have now failed to score in four consecutive games in all competitions for the first time since April 1985, their worst run in the clubs 116-year history.

Their last four games are hard to comprehend. A 3-0 thrashing at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán by Sevilla who currently top La Liga.

Real then failed to beat Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at home for the sixth year in a row.

A lacklustre away trip to Russia for their Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow piled more misery on Lopetegui’s men, before Deportivo Alaves won their first home game against Real Madrid in 87-years with a shock victory.

Despite strong rumours that the Spaniard has just three games to save his job, Lopetegui insists he has no concerns over his position at Real Madrid, despite a 1-0 defeat to Deportivo Alaves and a disastrous run of results.

The former Spain boss has the backing of his dressing room with both Nacho Fernandez and Sergio Ramos jumping to the 52-year-old’s defence.

Nacho, who alongside Ramos played under Lopetegui during his unbeaten spell in charge of the national team and has strong belief that Los Blancos can still have a strong season.

“We as players are with him to the death,” the defender told EFE.

“We are calm. We have been through situations like this and worse, and we’ve always been able to get out of them. I can’t guarantee we will win every title but Real Madrid have always proven that with the coach and players that we have, we will always be fighting for everything. We will be there until the end.”

Club captain Ramos who is playing under his tenth head coach since joining Real Madrid from Sevilla back in 2005 for a reported €27 million said after the defeat;

‘’Those who write off Madrid are wrong, we are going to be there, fighting to the death.’’

The fact of the matter is that Florentino Pérez was far too complacent in the summer transfer window, somewhat surprisingly after an atrocious domestic campaign under Zinedine Zidane last season when they finished 3rd and were an embarrassing 17 points behind Barcelona.

Real signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea for a cut priced €35 million, even though Kaylor Navas was more than competent, and they failed to address one major issue; How were they going to replace the goals provided by Cristiano Ronaldo?

Too much hope has been piled onto Vinicius Júnior who at just 18-years-old has only managed a cameo role at the club so far and is potentially five or six years away from being where the club need him to be.

Then there is Mariano Díaz, the Spanish born forward who stepped into the heavy number seven shirt and is still yet to score in La Liga for the club since returning to the club he left in 2016 for Olympique Lyon.

Rumours suggest that Eden Hazard will be on his way to the Santiago Bernabéu either in January or the 2019 summer transfer window, but this is simply too little too late for the Champions of Europe crying out for star quality.
