Europa League Elite

With the Europa League draws done and dusted, let’s get straight into it.

(Group E)

Arsenal will face last seasons quarter-finalist Sporting Lisbon, Azerbaijan Premier League winners, Qarabag, and Ukrainian Cup quarter-finalist, Vorskla Poltava.

After reaching the semi-finals last season, Arsene Wenger’s, uh, I mean, Unai Emery’s side will be ready to go again with the aim of finally claiming a European honour.

Unai Emery himself has a strong pedigree in this tournament, having won three successive titles with Sevilla (2013/14 to 2015/16). Arsenal fans alike will be hoping that their manager replicates the same success!

As an Arsenal fan, I’ve learnt to cherish the Europa League – a tournament that has previously been derided, especially among supporters of top Premier League sides. With a Champions League place at stake, there’s no reason why I think Arsenal shouldn’t have a real go like last season.

Prediction: 2nd

(Group L)

Chelsea will face Greek Cup holders PAOK, Belarusian Premier League winners, BATE Borisov, and Hungarian title holders, MOL Vidi FC.

This’ll be Chelsea’s first foray into Europe’s second-tier tournament since the 2012-13 season. Back then, they won the tournament after finishing third in the Champions League group.

Maurizio Sarris side have a rich experience in Europe, having missed out only once in the 2016-17 season.

For me, it’ll be difficult to decide which honour Chelsea go for between the Premier League, and the Europa League.

Prediction: 1st

To be honest, I can’t see either of these sides winning the Premier League this season, especially with the managerial changes. I think a European run will benefit both sides as both are presented with a glorious opportunity to return to the Champions League without having to finish in the top four (not saying that they shouldn’t try for a top four finish).

The Thursday to weekend matches will be difficult to contend with, especially with travel (to unknown countries) involved, but I reckon both sides will deal with the issue just fine.
