Stan Bowles Commemorative Benefit Match: Stanley’s Farewell

Stan Bowles got the send off from Loftus Road he deserved when we played Bournemouth last month.

The result wasn’t the one us QPR fans had hoped for, but putting the result aside you could feel the nostalgia and pride in the air around the ground for the great man. Fans of all ages wearing t-shirts with the great man’s face on it, sharing memories of Stan with each other was great to see.

Seeing the joy on Stan’s face stepping out onto the hallowed turf for the final time to the whole of Loftus Road singing “Stannleyyyy Stannleyyyy” would have warmed the coldest of hearts.

The money taken on the gate from ticket sales goes towards helping Stan who will sadly be needing full-time care.

I am incredibly proud to call myself a QPR fan, hosting the game for Stan after all he did for the club. It appears, at last, the club seems to be going back to days where the club made you felt like you belonged and looked out for anyone connected to Queens Park Rangers.

The club and the fans should be proud of their effort they made to make this game such a success and a fitting send off to Stan.

Stan Bowles fact file:

  • He played 315 times for Queens Park Rangers scoring 97 goals.
  • He played five times for England. Scoring just the once against Wales at Ninian Park in a 2-0 victory in 1974.
  • Was voted QPR’s all time greatest player in 2004.

QPR have retired the famous number ten shirt famously worn by Bowles. Dedicating the shirt number to Stan Bowles using the hashtag #JustforStan which was used to promote the benefit match.

  • A very enjoyable and interesting piece. The smile on Stans face says it all, QPR should be proud.
