Jose Mourinho has revealed that United are in talks to bring back former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic once he has recovered from his injury.

It has been talked about for some time now but finally, confirmation has come from United’s boss Jose Mourinho that talks are being held to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to the club. The Swede became a free agent at the end of last season after his contract at Old Trafford was not renewed. Since then there have been whispers about his future and a potential Old Trafford return has always been lurking.

Back in April, Zlatan picked up a knock in a 2-1 Europa League semi-final win over Belgium side Anderlecht. United didn’t want to re-sign Zlatan at the time as they were worried about how long his injury would be. The injury was believed to keep Ibrahimovic out for well over the Christmas period however, the 35-year-old is apparently on the mend a lot faster than previously believed.

Jose this week declared that Zlatan is still not ready for a return yet and that he still needs the time to recover. But he did go on to say that the Swede was eager to do more at footballs highest level and that talks about bringing him back for the second half of the season were on still the cards.

Before his injury in April, Zlatan had featured in 28 games, netting 17 times for United. The striker was seen as the main man when it came to United’s attack last season. However, this season with the arrival of United’s new £90 million striker, Romelu Lukaku, would Zlatan have to take a back seat to United’s new number 9?

With Champions League football adding to United’s already hectic fixture list this season the possibility of re-signing of Ibrahimovic would be beneficial for the club. It would allow a good rotation between the United strike force and it would also mean the addition of another proven goal scorer at Mourinho’s disposal.

He may not be as essential to United as he was last season, but he would still be a big presence in the dressing room, a potential mentor figure for the youngsters to look up to and most importantly he can score goals when called upon.
