Stan Bowles Commemorative Benefit Match: More than just a game

Queens Park Rangers play Bournemouth at the end of the Month in a benefit game for QPR legend and ex England international Stanley Bowles who is battling with Alzheimer’s disease.

Now every QPR fan will know of Stanley Bowles and his exploits he achieved whilst at QPR. Stan made 315 appearances for Rangers, wearing the famous number 10 shirt and almost scored a century of goals hitting the net 97 times for the R’s.

Stan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2013 and needs our support more than ever as his condition has worsened over the past few years. The club in 2015, held Stan Bowles day where the players wore shirts with the charity Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness of the disease.

This benefit match is sadly likely to be Stan’s last trip to Loftus Road. So it is important that every QPR fan can help in some form to make the day special for Stanley and his family to give him a Loftus Road send off to remember.

There has been a massive effort to organise this match, but the hard work that has gone into organising the match has been somewhat overshadowed by an embarrassing amount of infighting amongst QPR fans on social media.

There have been reports of posters from different groups taking official posters made for the game down and instead putting their own up. Which for me makes no real point as it looks incredibly childish and does no favours for anyone, drawing the wrong kind of attention for this game.

There have also been cases of fans having their support questioned on social media due to the fact they simply cannot go. Another example of stupid infighting amongst QPR fans that was totally not needed in the lead up to this match. Especially as there are a number of QPR fans who cannot make the game promoting the game anywhere they can thus doing their bit for the game and Stan. So accusations these fans are not real fans are unjust and pathetic.

There appear to be a number of individuals with their own personal agendas who would rather put their needs first rather than Stan’s. Which has been incredibly frustrating for those who want the game to be a success and if there are accusations flying about who is and who isn’t a true fan then surely it’s the ones pushing their own agenda who aren’t being true fans. Surely you’d put any differences aside and do all you possibly could to make the game a success if you were a true fan?

Now is the time to stop the petty arguments and disputes that have gone on in the lead up to this game. The club has sold over 7000 tickets for this match and it would be nice to see Loftus Road as full as possible. So now it’s time for us to get on and make a day that the fans, the club, and Stan would be proud of.

The match is this Saturday and you can buy tickets here https://www.eticketing.co.uk/qpr/details/event.aspx?itemref=6801

  • Very much enjoyed the Stan Bowles article, I hope the day goes well for him and his family. Looking forward to the follow up piece on how the day went. Do all clubs take interest in their old players health?
